Merrill opened the football season blasting visiting Bridgeport 70-24 Friday evening. Senior Kyle Tack accounted for eight touchdowns on the day, throwing six, running for another and returning an interception for a TD. Tack completed 16 of 24 passes for 268 yards and added 38 yards rushing. He also led the defense with 9 tackles.
The game was close until tack returned an interception 36 yards for a TD just before the half.
In the third quarter Merrill broke loose offensivley scoring 28 points while stopping Bridgport QB Deon Duncan from finding any open recievers. Duncan finished the game 249 yards passing and three touchdowns.
Jordan Garchow added 159 yards rushing with 1 touchdown and had 6 receptions with 2 TD's for the Vandals. Derek Good tallied 6 catches for 73 yards and 2 touchdowns. Zack Shebester notched 8 tackles.
Xavierion Hopkins led the receivers with 170 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Vince Motley had 73 yards rushing with 1 TD.
Merrill travels to play Valley Lutheran (1-0) next Thursday at 7pm, while Bridgeport travels for a matchup with Essexville Garber.
