Saginaw Valley League rivals Heritage and Arthur Hill squared off at the Hill Thursday evening. After a close three quarters of play and a 14-12 lead, the Hawks Marquin Evans scrambled in for two touchdows to beat the Lumberjacks in the final quarter.
He finished with 232 yards rushing with 3 touchdowns and added 3 receptions for 59 yards and 1 TD. His brother Marquis scored the other TD for the Hawks on a 16 yard TD pass.
Jay Carmichael tosssed a pass to Marquin who ran in 57 yards for his first touchdown early in the second quarter. Johnny Dukes recovered the ball for the Lumberjacks after the Hawks mishandled a punt return. Yenta Sanders scored for the Lumberjacks on the next play going 23 yards for a TD (PAT failed). The Hawks took a 7-6 lead into the half.
Marquis Evans scored his TD on a pass from Carmichael but the Lumberjacks got a Mike Copes touchdown on a 2 yard QB sneak (2 point conversion failed) after another Heritage mishandled punt return. Heritage led 14-12 at the end of three.
Marquin scored the final two touchdowns, the second one coming after Chad Galarno intercepted an Arthur Hill pass. Marquin scored on the following play.
Yenta Sanders led the Lumberjacks with 119 yards rushing and 1 TD.
Heritage (2-0) travels to play Midland High (1-1) next Friday. while Arthur Hill (0-2) hosts Bay City Western.
