FRANKENMUTH - Jaleel Hogan is only a sophomore, but at 6-foot-6 he gets a lot of attention.
The Buena Vista sophomore received plenty of attention from Knights coach Chris Chaffer at halftime and the result was a 55-46 win Tuesday over Frankenmuth.
"The third quarter shows you the type of player he could be if he puts his mind to it," Chaffer said. "He's got a lot of potential, but he needs to play the way he did in the second half to realize it.
"My halftime speech, I guess, was a little inspiring."
Hogan scored nine points in the third quarter, bringing the 10-7 Knights back from a 26-16 halftime deficit.
Frankenmuth held a 37-33 lead going into the fourth quarter, but BV guard Dwayne Fairris took over, scoring 13 points in the quarter including 6 of 6 from the free throw line to seal the win.
"In the first half, we were lazy on defense," Chaffer said. "We gave up a lot of layups. We decided to play defense in the second half."
Frankenmuth, which falls to 12-6, did not make a 3-pointer for the first time this season.
"We have a good inside-out offense, but we did not shoot well at all this game," Frankenmuth coach Andrew Donovan said. "We consider out perimeter shooting a strength, but you wouldn't know it from this game. It would have been nice to make a jump shot."
Zach Pendleton led the Eagles with 14 points, followed by Adam Bookmyer with 12 points and Kent Redford with 10. Pendleton also grabbed eight rebounds for the Eagles.
"We didn't make the tough plays," Donovan said. "We have to get mentally tougher down the stretch. If you're not mentally tough at winning time, you're not going to win."
Fairris finished with 21 points to lead all scorers. Hogan finished with 14 points and eight rebounds.
"Give credit to Buena Vista ... they made some tough plays," Donovan said. "We can learn a lot from this game. It's that time of year when games like this are good for you, even if you lose."
