HILLSDALE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team was defeated by Hillsdale College today (Jan. 28) 61-57 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match up.

The Cardinals went into the locker room down by two at the end of the first half.  Saginaw Valley was led by freshman Chris Webb (Saginaw, Mich. / Arthur Hill HS) and sophomore Greg Foster (Indianapolis, Ind. / T.C. Howe HS) who both scored five points.  Senior Avery Stephenson (Romulus, Mich.)  pulled down nine of his 14 rebounds in the first half of the contest.

HILLSDALE, Mich. -  The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team lost to Hillsdale College Thursday night (Jan. 28), 75-57.  The loss drops the Lady Cardinals' record to 4-14 overall with a 2-11 record in the GLIAC.  Hillsdale improves to 8-9 overall on the season, holding an 8-5 record in conference play.

The Lady Cardinals started the opening half in front, going up by as many as seven points twice in the first 20 minutes, the second being when SVSU extended its lead to 29-22 after a three-pointer by senior forward Jenna Saarela (Saugatuck, Mich./Michigan Tech) at the 6:22 mark.  Hillsdale would bounce back and score 12 un-answered points to take a 34-29 lead.

The Chargers' lead was only six with 13 seconds left, and a lay-up by Cardinal freshman Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) with three seconds left cut Hillsdale's lead to four, where it would stand at the half, with the Chargers leading, 38-34.


Delta Men Improve Basketball Record to 12-10 With Win Over Oakland 1-4-10
The Delta College mens basketball team improved their record with a 64-62 win over Oakland Comunity College on Wednesday evening.

The Pioneers have gone 3-2 over the last five games and currently have a 12-10 record.

Delta has seven more games left in the season, with four home gamesscheduled.

The Pioneers host Mott C.C. on Saturday, February 6, at 2 p.m., followed by Schoolcraft on Wednesday, February 10, at 7:30 p.m.. The following week Delta hosts Macomb C.C. on Wednesday, February 17 at 7:30 p.m.

The final game of the season Delta will host St. Clair C.C. on Monday, February 22, at 7:30 p.m.

Cardinals Fall to Lake Superior State, 64-60 1-4-10

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men’s basketball team was defeated by Lake Superior State today (Jan. 2), 64-60 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match up.

The Cardinals went into the locker room with a 34-27 advantage over the Lakers going up as many as 11 points in the half.  Junior Keithan Jackson (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Godwin Heights HS) led Saginaw Valley with 11 points and 11 rebounds.  The Cardinals shot 7-for-11 from the free throw line.

Saginaw Valley maintained their lead until less than three minutes remained in the contest as the Lakers connected on a free throw.  The Cardinals ended the night connecting on 12-of-17 free throws.

Flint Southwestern Academy came to Heritage High School and was sent home with losses for their boys freshman and JV basketball teams.

In the first game the Hawks freshman team got a big win 50-22 over the Knights.

Harneet Singh scored 11-points for the Hawks, Bradley Brown had 8-points, Marcus Wright scored 7-points, Michael Buchanan and Kyle Telder each scored 6-points, Telder also tallied 2-assists.


Lady Cardinals Defeat Lake Superior State At The Buzzer, 62-60 1-4-10

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball won a thrilling contest against visiting Lake Superior State University, 62-60 Saturday evening (Jan. 2).  The victory is the second-straight GLIAC win for the Cardinals, who now stand at 4-6 overall on the season with a 2-3 mark in the GLIAC.  With the loss, Lake Superior drops to 7-3 overall and 4-2 in conference play. 

SVSU, after trailing by five at the half, 27-22, re-gained the lead at the 18:22 mark in the second half.  Lake Superior State took the lead, though, via a three-pointer by Nicole Marshall to make the score 60-59 in the Lakers' advantage with 4.5 seconds left in the game.


Maurice Jones and Derrick Davis McDonald All-American Nominees 2-6-10
Bridgeport High School's Derrick Davis and Arthur Hill's Maurice Jones learned they are nominees for the 2010 McDonald's All-America high school basketball team

Davis, a 6-foot-2 guard, averages 20 points, seven assists and nine rebounds for the Bearcats and became the first Bridgeport player to ever earn that honor. Davis would like to attend an Ivy League school and that may not be out of the question. He drew Ivy League attention last year by scoring a 30 on his ACT.

Carrollton Standout running back Robert Essex has signed a letter-of-intent to play next year for Saginaw Valley State University.

Essex ran for 1,872-yards and 22-Td’s this past year.  He helped lead the Cavaliers to two consecutive Tri-Valley West Titles and Carrollton’s first ever appearance in the playoffs this past season. Essex also earned an Associated Press All-State Selection this year.

Essex will join Saginaw High’s Greg Hayes as a hometown teamate for  SVSU next season.

Nathaniel Ellsworth ran cross country for four years and track for three years. He was the Saginaw Valley League MVP his senior season, and three times all league honoree in cross country. All this did not go unnoticed as Nathaniel earned a Class A Scholar-Athlete Award from the MHSAA. The winners will awarded their honors during halftime ceremonies of the Class C boy’s basketball finals at the Breslin Center at Michigan State University on March 27th.

When it comes to being in the spotlight, Darvin Ham is no stranger. His grandmother Wilmer- Jones-Ham was the first female mayor of Saginaw, MI and His father played for the Detroit Pistons in the 2004 season. A standout for the Bridgeport “Bearcats”, Ham a senior at 6 foot 5 scored 277 points so far this season, averaging 18.3 points a game, 9.3 rebounds, and shoots .714% at the free-throw.

Ham recently gave his verbal commitment to play at Northwood University where he plans to major in Business/Finance. Bridgeport focuses on attitude, academics and then athletics and Northwood was the right fit.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team is set to host the Ferris State Bulldogs in the 2009-10 GLIAC Men's Basketball Tournament Quarterfinals on Tuesday, March 2.  The Cardinals (16-11, 13-9 GLIAC) wrapped-up the #4 seed in the tournament following a split in the Upper Peninsula against Northern Michigan University and Michigan Tech University.  Ferris State (15-12, 13-9 GLIAC) will enter the contest as the conference's #5 seed.

SVSU won both meetings this season, defeating Ferris by a score of 86-72 on Jan. 9, and again on Feb. 18, 68-66. 

Game time for Tuesday's game is set for 7:30 pm.  Tickets for the contest are $3 for students and $5 for adults and general admission.  Tickets are currently on sale in the Athletic Department.  ESPN 100.9 FM will broadcast the game live from the Ryder Center, with coverage beginning at 6:00 pm, and will be running promotions throughout the contest.
