SVSU's softball season came to a crashing halt after they lost a 5-0 heartbreaker to Wayne State Sunday afternoon. The Cardinals defeated Indianapolis 3-0 on Friday and #7 ranked Wayne State 4-3 on Saturday to reach the regional title game.
Wayne State scored four runs in the third inning and one run in the fourth inning for the win. The Warriors had 11-hits in the game to SVSU's 4-hits. Ashley Jordan, Jill Peterson, Angie Kaiser and Shannon McLaughlin each had a hit for the Cardinals. Senior Kari Bowlby took the loss on the mound.
SVSU Ends Softball Season At NCAA Regional 5-16-10
Heritage pitcher Jeff Kinley was invited to play in the Annual Michigan High School Baseball Coaches Association All-Star Classic, Monday, June 21 at Comerica Park in Detroit. Kinley, who will play for for Team West, was among 36 athletes from throughout the state invited to play in the game. Kinley was the Saginaw Valley League's Most Valuable Player as a junior and has signed to play his college ball at Michigan State University. ![]()
Heritage Pitcher Jeff Kinley Selected To Play In Annual Baseball All-Star Classic 6-15-10
Several area baseball players recently made the Michigan High School Coaches All-State Team.
In Division 1, Heritage pitcher Jeff Kinley was listed on the 1st team, while Bay City Western's Alex Kravat and Bay City Central's Brent Precour earned 2nd team honors. In Division 3, St Charles infielder Dugan Roosa received 1st team honors and Valley Lutheran's Kyle Kaufman earned 2nd Team honors.

Michigan High School Soccer Association All-State Honors Earned By Several Area Players 6-22-10
Bay City Western's Kim Vallencourt earned Division 1, All-State 3rd Team honors by the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association. Kirsten Catloth and Abbey Miller of Heritage and Lindsey Lee, Rachel Marble and Erica Lee of Midland Dow earned Honorable Mention.
Frankenmuth's Michelle Marolf earned Division 3, All-State 1st Team honors, while Clara Williamsa and Jenny Johnson also of Frankenmuth earned 2nd Team honors along with goalkeeper Sarah Yancer of Freeland. Shawtoreah Turk of Carrollton has signed a letter of intent to continue her track career at Central Michigan University today. Turk set school records in the 200 meter, 400 meter and long jump and was named MVP of the Saginaw County track meet at Hemlock earlier this season. She finished runner-up in the long jump and 400 meter dash and 8th in the 400 meter dash at the state finals June 5. ![]()

Krystal Garza boxing out of Shiloh Boxing Club has qualified for the Olymipic Boxing Regionals May 29-31 in Crete, Illinois. She and six other boxers from Shiloh won a state championship at the Southfield Sports Arena over the weekend.

Swan Valley Catcher Jacob Jebb Signs Letter Of Intent To Play Baseball For Seward Community College 6-22-10
Swan Valley catcher Jacob Jebb has signed a letter-of-intent to play baseball for Seward County Community College in Liberal, Kansas next season. Jebb was a three-year starter on the varsity team batting .443 while hitting in 33-runs and scoring 34. He threw out 31-percent of the runners trying to steal while himself stealing 13-bases. ![]()

The North Saginaw Township Little League teams had a good weekend in Little League district play.
In the Senior Division (16-U), Saginaw Township North defeated Caro 4-1 in Cass City on Sunday. Pitcher Keith Whyte fanned 11-batters while going seven innings. The team went 2-0 over the weekend and with the win on Sunday, advances to the district semi-finals on Tuesday. Saginaw Township South walloped Pigeon 19-3 in a mercy shortened four inning game Saturday.
Company C defeated the Locker Room 9-6 on Wednesday evening to advance to the championship game of "B" division at the Joseph M. Godard Memorial Mens Modified Softball Tournament at Hoy Park. Company C will face Hills Bar, who needs a win to force a "what if" game.
The Saginaw Township North Seniors (16-U) defeated Caro 14-3 to win the “if necessary” game of the Little League district tournament on Wednesday at Cass City.
Alex Maturen led the team going 4-for-4 with a double, triple, 2-RBIs and scored 3-runs. Michael Albosta had 4-hits, 2-doubles and 2-RBI's, while Keith Whyte had 3-hits with a double and 1-RBI. They advance to sectional play with a best two-out-of three format. Game 1 of a doubleheader against the District 4 winner is scheduled for noon on Sunday at Oakland University. If needed, the deciding game would be held at 6 p.m. Monday. The winner advances to the state tournament in Midland.

Hill's Bar made it two straight years.
For the second straight year in the Joseph M. Godard Memorial Tournament, Hill's Bar battled through the losers' bracket and had to face Company C in the finals. Just like last year, Hill's Bar scored a pair of wins to take the title.
Saginaw Area Basketball All-Stars Beat Boys and Girls All-Stars from Flint 7-21-10
A group of Saginaw area All-star high school boys and girls basketball players defeated Flint All-Star teams this past weekend at Flint International Academy.
The Saginaw boys all-star team defeated the talented Flint team 115-101. Saginaw was led by Bridgeports Darvin Ham with 23-points, Heritage's James Johnson with 22, Buena Vista's Devante Jackson with 15 and Heritage's A.J. Thomas who finished with 14. T'aron Boose, a transfer student from Flint Beecher finished with 10-points. The girls all-start team also beat Flint, by a score of 75-61. The Saginaw team was led by Carrollton's Myeisha Agnew who finished with 15 points. Heritage's Shawnicka Thomas scored 14 and both Champayne Johnson and Diamond Tolliver from Saginaw High, each scored 13-points each. ![]()
Carrollton Festival Of Races Marathon Run Draws Runners From All Over Nation 7-26-10
The Annual Carrollton Festival of Races took place on Sunday without a hitch at Carrollton High School drawing runners and fans from all over the nation. This years event added added a new 8.3 min-marathon to go along with the featured marathon, 20k,10k and 5k run and the 5k walk.
Great cool weather and sunshine assured another good turnout for the event. The event also had a new record turout or runners in the marathon, with some very ecstatic runners qualifying for the Boston Marathon. Nathan Bussier, of Saginaw easily out paced the rest of the field easily winning the 5k run while setting a new course record of 15:32. 66. Chuck Engle, 39, of Dublin, Ohio was the overall winner of the marathon in 2:43:12.0 and Melissa Begeron, 45, of Muskegon finished tops in the womens division in 3:27:12.0. Douglas Finkbeiner, 46, of Saginaw won the wheelchair division. |
