Heritage High School brought home the Division 1, District wrestling title Wednesday evening. Eight Hawk wrestlers recorded a pin in their match for the district title. Heritage had seven pins in a row which resulted in the match-up ending early due to the hawks earning enough points for the win.

Nouvel Captures Division 4 District Wrestling Championship 2-11-10

The Nouvel wrestling team won the Division 4 District wrestling tile Thursday evening at home. The Panthers got past Michigan Lutheran Seminary, 65-12 before beating Mayville, 49-22 in similar fashion.

The Panthers had seven wrestlers who finished with double wins on the night. Vinny Ramos - 112/119, Daniel Ofori-Dankwa - 125, Robert Hughes - 135, Tony Barron - 145, Danny Rosales - 152/160, Clae Henderson - 171 and Shawn Kamm – 285.

Birch Run qualified nine wrestlers Saturday at the division 3 districts at Richmond. Aaron Brown won the title in the 215-pound weight class. Josh Hobson (103) and Cory Trijo (119) both won second place on their weight class.

Swan Valley and Freeland Wrestlers Advance To Regionals 2-15-10
Twelve Swan Valley wrestlers, including six district champions qualified to advance to the division 3 individual regionals. Freeland had seven wrestlers advance at the Standish-Sterling individual districts on Saturday.

Seven wrestlers from Heritage High School qualified to go to regional’s Saturday at Bay City Western’s individual districts. Qualifying were Tyler Balderstone (130),  Ian Ousley (145), Scott Brown (152), Trevis Harrold (160), Tim Robinson (189), Ola Jibwu (215) and Brandon Midcalf (285)

Nouvel Falls at Wrestling Team Regionals To Marlette 2-17-10

After squeaking by Burton Bendle 38-35, the Panthers lost to Marlette 40-34 in the final round of the Wrestling Division 4 regionals at Mayville Wednesday evening.

Wrestlers for Nouvel that finished 2-0 on the night were, Jesse Vasquez (140), Clay Henderson (171), Alex Giallonardo (189/215) and Shawn Kamm (285).

Swan Valley Wrestlers Win Third Straight Regional Crown 2-18-10
The Division 3, #3 ranked Swan Valley wrestlers won their third straight Regional title Wednesday evening at Freeland. The Vikings got a bye in the first round because opponent Pinconning informed the MSHAA that they had used an ineligible wrestler. In the meanwhile, #9 ranked Bullock Creek defeated #5 ranked Caro 46-23.

In the Regional finals, the Vikings defeated Bullock Creek 41-18. Matt Beebe won his match 11-5, which was his 200th career win, becoming only the third wrestler in school history to reach that mark.


Freeland’s Gymnastic team finally has a home. It has been many years since the team has been able to host a meet, but that all changes on Saturday as they host a meet at 6:00 pm at their new home in the Freeland Sports Zone. The tri meet will include Vassar and Sturgis. The Falcons are currently ranked 14 in the state by their peers and hope to get at least 4 individuals qualified in the State finals on March 12. One hopeful is freshman Taylor Spitz who is a Division 1-level competitor.

Saginaw High's Quinton Moore Wins Regional Individual Wrestling Title 2-23-10
This past Saturday, Saginaw High wrestler Quinton Moore finished with a regional title at Heritage High School. Moore, wrestling at 285-pounds heads to the state finals tournament, which begins on March 4 at the Palace of Auburn Hills.

Swan Valley Wrestlers Head To State Individual Finals On March 4
Swan Valley is sending nine wrestlers to the individual wrestling finals tournament next week. They are led by individual regional champs Darius Wass (130) and Troy Lamson (152). Viking B.J. Suitor failed to reach the state finals this year after winning three consecutive state title at 119-pounds. Plagued by a back injury he was knocked out of contention. Suitor was the only wrestler this year who had a shot at becoming the latest 4-time champ.

Saginaw High wrestler Quinton Moore captured the Trojans second Individual state wrestling title ever. Wrestling in the heavyweight 285-pound division Moore defeated Connor Kruse, of Lowell in a Decision, 5-4. Moore's uncle Yohanas Moore was the previous and only other state champion for the Trojans.

Swan Valley also had a champion of their own in division 3. Troy Lamson, wrestling in the 152-pound division won his finals match defeated Kody O'Neill of Reed City in a 17-2 Decision.

Lamson finished his high school wrestling career with his 200th victory and a 60-2 season record.

Swan Valley had four other wrestlers medal in the tournament. Chris Theile (125) and Jerry Flores (140) both finished third and Darius Wass (130) finished fourth, while Matt Beebe (145) finished in fifth-place finish.

Quinton Morre and Troy Lamson win Individual State Wrestling Titles 3-8-10

St Charles boys bowling team brought home a division 4 state bowling championship after beating Rogers City 1615-1575 on Friday. In the semi-finals, the Bulldongs beat defending champs Iron Mountain 1756-1693. It is the first state boys bowling title for the Bulldogs.

Garrett Alvarez led the Bulldogs in the finals match with a 217. Zach Rich finished with a 192, C.J. Brocker 180, Dugan Roosa 175 and Gus Hendrickson finished with a 153.

MSHAA Regional Finals
The Freeland girls gymnastics team qualified for the state finals after finishing in second at the regionals competition on Saturday. Grand Ledge finished first with 149.85 while Freeland closely followed with 141. Grande ledge is the two-time defending champion.

The Falcons will also be sending five girls to the individual state finals. Freshman Taylor Spitz finished first on beam (9.4), second on floor (9.475) and second on both bars (9.3) and vault (9.65) to finish as over-all runner up. Senior co-captains Mariah Elliott (7th beam, 7th floor) and Sara Schram (7th, vault) also qulaified in division 1.

Shelby Niedzwiecki (2nd floor) and Sophie VanKirk (4th beam) qualified in division 2.

The state finals are next weekend. Team competition is set for Friday and the individuals are on Saturday.
