Show Your Heart 2-1-10
The Show Your Heart Benefit Comedy Show Friday January 29 took place just as scheduled despite the headliner’s flight being delayed. Comedian D.L. Hughley one of the original Kings of Comedy, came out to Delta College for an American Heart Association benefit on behalf of the Dorian Styles Dawkins Foundation. Dawkins was the 14-yr old son of future Saginaw Hall of Famer, Saginaw High School coach Lou Dawkins and Loomis Math, Science, and Technology Academy Principal Latricia Dawkins. He collapsed as a result of a heart condition on June 12, 2009 at a basketball game in East Lansing, a day Lou Dawkins says, “No one should ever have to go through!” Brandon Webb was the opening act for the event. Webb, who goes by the moniker B-Webb is a Christian Rapper. He proved to be a tough act to follow after performing high intensity energy songs like Random Thoughts and a crowd moving Let’ Em. CoCo followed behind B-Webb. Although she was introduced as a Detroit area D.J., she performed as a comedian. I laughed so hard I developed stomach muscles. I thought CoCo’s performance would make it hard for Hughley. But Hughley, being the vet that he is, proved otherwise. From the time he stepped on the stage the F-bombs and jokes easily rolled off his tongue. Two minutes into the show, I totally forgot that this was a charity event. Towards the end of his performance Hughley walked into the crowd and embarrassed everyone he approached. As he got closer to the section I was seated in, the audience around me started to move towards areas that Hughley had already terrorized. I wanted to get up and move but I thought about the chance of me being caught and singled out. He never made it to me which was a relief.
