Vikings Advance in Football Playoffs With Win Over Portland 10-31-09

Swan Valley beat Portland in the District 2 Semifinals in Portland, MI Friday night ending Portland’s hope of going to the State Finals.

Both teams played strong defense with no one scoring in the first quarter. Swan Valley’s Cody Call ran in 4 yards to help the Vikings score first in the 2nd quarter, but the extra point was no good. Portland hit back as Alexander Newman scored a TD on a 10 yard run. They tried for a conversion, but failed. The first half ended with a 6-6 tie.

In the 3rd quarter Viking Jonathan Grace scored on a 3 yard run, again they missed the extra point. Portland failed to score with the quarter ending with a 12-6 Viking lead.

St Charles Runs Over Reese 35-14 In Second Round Playoff Football Game 10-31-09

St Charles did what they do best and ran over Reese in their second round match-up 35-14. The Bulldog's single-wing offense led to five rushing TDs including two by Tyler Nieman in the third quarter to put the game away.

Dugan Roosa got the Bulldogs on the board first with a 5-yard TD run for a 7-0 lead after the first quarter.

Mike Spannagel broke loose in the second quarter and ran in for a 38-yard TD, Travis Crane booted in the PAT for a 14-0 Bulldog lead. St Charles was looking to take that lead into the half but a fumble recovery by the Bulldogs was negated by a penalty which led to Kyle Yaklin hitting Trevor Gruber on a 38-yard TD pass with 46-seconds left in the half. The Bulldogs took the 14-7 lead into the locker room at the half.



Swan Valley Comes back in 2nd half to Win Football District Final 11-6-09

Stanton Central Montcalm lost to Swan Valley 28-22 in the District Finals Friday night after leading in the first half of the game. Jared Briguglio scored four rushing TDs to lead the Viking to the district title.

With 1:09 left on the clock in the 1st quarter, Montcalm’s Zach Rydal scored a touchdown off a 6 yard pass from Leo Bellows. They decided to go for the 2 point conversion and scored on a run from Drew Sanders. The quarter ended with a 0-8 Montcalm lead.

Ithaca' s Niznak Throws 3 TDs, Runs For Another in Win Over St Charles 11-13-09

Ithaca's Qb Alex Niznak throws 3-TDs and runs for another to lead Ithaca over St Charles 39-13 in the division 6 regional final at Central Michigan University. With the win the Yellow Jackets avenge the only loss of the season at the hands of the Bulldogs losing 28-42.

The Bulldogs got on the board first but four unanswered TDs by Ithaca put the Bulldogs back against the wall.

Tyler Larsen scored on a 50-yard run to put the Bulldogs up 7-0 in the first quarter. With just over one minute in the quarter Niznak connected with Darin Wideman on a 18-yard TD pass, but the Yellow Jackets failed to hit the PAT, 7-6.

Ithaca scored the only points in the second quarter with two minutes left in the half when Niznak hit David Brown on a 24-yard pass in the left corner. The two point conversion failed and Ithaca took a 12-7 lead into the locker room.

Midland High Falls to Birmingham Brother Rice in Football Playoff Game11-14-09

Midland High lost to Birmingham Brother Rice 49-27 in it's division 2 regional final Saturday afternoon. Warrior QB Frankie Popp tossed three TD passes in the first quarter to put the Chemics down 21-14. Birmingham squeaked by into the playoffs with a 5-4 record but has gone on to win three straight playoff games to make it to the final four.

Chemic Charles Leffingwell started the scoring running in from 39-yards for a 7-0 lead. Warrior QB Popp then threw two TD passes, one for 68-yards and the next for 98-Yards. A minute later Leffingwell then ran in his second TD from 59-yards, Matt Frazier booted the PAT to tie the game 14-14. Popp then threw his third TD connecting on a 24-yards pass. The Warriors led 21-14.


Millington Beats Ovid-Elsie to Advance To Football State Semi-Final Game 11-14-09

Friday night was a good night for Millington as they defeated previously unbeaten Ovid-Elsie in the Division 2 Regional Finals 22-21. The Marauder’s star running back Chris Robinson and Millington’s Cameron Wilson traded touchdowns, each scoring three. It was the Cardinals Wilson that made the difference, running in a two-point conversion for the 1-point win

 Ovid-Elsie was the first to score in the first quarter when Robinson ran for 56 yards to score a touchdown. Dustin Karlik then kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead at quarter's end.


Swan Valley Wins Football Regional Title by Defeating Kingsford 11-14-09

Swan Valley defeated Kingsford 35-21 at Northern Michigan University this afternoon. The Vikings made the long trip to the U.P and won the division 4 regional title. It took a second half comeback for the Vikings who trailed 21-14 at halftime. Jared Briguglio and Cody Call share the honors of leading the team to victory. Briguglio and Call both ran for 2-TDs and Call tossed a pass to Briguglio for the other TD.

Kingsford started things out jumping to a 6-0 lead, on a 79-yard run on the first play of the game at the line of scrimmage. Briguglio answered with a 2-yard rushing TD, Andy Collison added the PAT, 7-6 Vikings after one quarter.


Ravenna Destroys Merrill in Regional Football Final 77- 49 11-14-09

Merrill scored 7-passing TDs but it wasn't enough to win the division 7 regional title. Ravenna scored 10- rushing TDs and added another passing TD to whip the Vandals 77-49. The 126-points scored was the sixth highest scoring game in state history.

Things looked good for Merrill after going up by two touchdowns to start the game.

After a gutsy onside kick recovery by Merrill on the first play of the game Merrill drove the ball down field. Nate Tack threw a 7-yard TD pass to Jimmy Schoof, then connected with Tyler Guthrie on a 36-yard pass, Wood added the PATs for a 14-0 lead. Ravenna answered with two TDs of their own on 56 and 5-yard runs. Merrill responded when Tyler Gross threw a pass to Ryan Eggebrecht for a 79-yard TD. Merrill led 21-14 after the first quarter.


The sun was shining, the day perfect for a football game. Swan Valley and Three Rivers went head to head in the District Semi-finals at East Kentwood Football Stadium. Both teams came ready to play, but only one winner could leave the field and play at Ford Field in Detroit next week. Swan Valley’s road to the finals hit a roadblock losing to Three Rivers 14-10 in a game that came down to the last minute to determine the winner.

In the 1st quarter Swan Valley quarterback Cody Call fed the ball to Jared Briguglio, run after run trying to move the ball into scoring position, but it was not meant to be as the Wildcats held their ground. The Vikings did the same as the quarter went scoreless.

In the second quarter the Wildcats Aaron Spence scored on a 1 yard run for the first touchdown of the game. The extra point kicked by Kyle Lokar put them in the lead 7-0. Swan Valley answered back with a touchdown when Briguglio scored diving in on a 1 yard run. Andy Collison kicked the extra point to tie the game at 7-7 going into the half.
