The Detroit Lion’s Super Bowl

February 21st, 2010

Welcome to the Super Bowl!!!

Not the one that resided on South Beach a few weeks ago.

The “Super Bowl” that takes place in Detroit EVERY SINGLE YEAR….

The NFL Draft. Where hopes & dreams are built up midway through the previous season’s blunders….and subsequently deflated by a franchise’s ability to make a seemingly simple process harder than imaginable. Such is the life of a Detroit Lions fan. Let’s delve into the utterly painful, but endearing process, shall we??

Round 1

Since the Lions have the 2nd overall pick, this pick HAS to net an impact player & starter from DAY ONE. The 2 top rated prospects here are DT Ndamukong Suh (Nebraska) & DT Gerald McCoy (Texas). Either of these players would suffice, with Suh having the edge in talent & explosiveness. McCoy isn’t far off. To some, these two are a wash. A sleeper pick in this spot could be OT Russell Okung (Ok St).

An EVEN BETTER scenario could play out, however. QB’s Sam Bradford (Okla) & Jimmy Clausen (ND) are steadily climbing the board in numerous mock drafts. There are 3 teams that are desperate for top flite signal callers (Wash, Sea, Buff). After the NFL Combine, look for trade rumors to heat up, as these teams are itching to possibly move up. The BEST CASE SCENARIO outside of the Lions drafting Suh is for one of these teams to sell the farm (and extra draft picks) to the Lions for the rights to one of these QB’s. The Lions roster is SO devoid of talent. They’d definitely listen.

My Pick: Gerald McCoy. I don’t see St. Louis passing up the consensus best player in the draft (Suh).

Round 2

For Lions fans, this is where the draft gets painful. The fact that there are SO many holes in this roster, do you go for the dreaded “best player available”?? Or do you simply satisfy a need?? Based upon last year, Lions GM Martin Mayhew thankfully satisfied a need & took a playmaker at a position of need (Louis Delmas). The Lions are in desperate need of secondary help & there are pllenty of prospects on the board that would fill them. FS Nate Allen (S Fla) would be a nice pick here, as would CB’s Patrick Robinson (FSU) & Kyle Wilson (Boise St), with Wilson satisfying another specific need at KR, in addition to being a solid corner. It wouldn’t be a Lions draft if I didn’t mention the possibility of GM Martin Mayhew salivating over an offensive player in this slot. That player being RB Jahvid Best. If there is a God…..NO RB here.

My Pick: CB Kyle Wilson

Round 3

It can’t be overstated enough. The Lions have MANY holes to fill. NOT least of which, is the offensive & defensive lines. In today’s NFL, you have to HAVE a QB, protect the QB, and RUSH the opposing QB. The Lions need the best player available on either line. Good news is…there are players available in this round who meet these needs. DT Geno Atkins (Georgia) would be a disruptive force in the middle. G Jon Asamoah would shore up a weak spot in a hurry. G Marshall Newhouse is a freak athlete that would be an instant starter. DE Greg Hardy, although having weight issues at Ole Miss, looks to be a steal here after a promising Senior Bowl appearance. **Disclaimer** Again, I have to alert you to the salivation factor, as WR Dexter McCluster (Ole Miss) will probably be available here. He definitely has speed to burn & will wow people in workouts. Will the ghost of Matt Millen & his penchant for WR’s manifest itself?? Um, bartender???

My Pick: WR Dexter McCluster (Ole Miss).

This is where Detroit area bars start to make money. Until this organization can overcome its desire to make a splash in the draft vs. simply addressing needs, this process will continue to be a painful one. I would humor you with more round by round coverage & picks, but what’s the use?? I’d have MORE luck on the roulette table.

Can I get ten $10 chips, please??

Oh happy day….

Show Your Heart

January 31st, 2010

By Bobjohnson

Friday I had the chance to attend a wonderful event for Dorian Styles Dawkins. Comedian D.L. Hughley came out to Delta College for an American Heart Association benefit. Dawkins was the 14-yr old son of future Saginaw Hall of Famer, Saginaw High School coach Lou Dawkins and Loomis Academy principal Trish Dawkins. The comedy show Friday was the first part of a two weekend event. On Feb. 6 at the Delta College Pioneers Gym, Columbus Northland and Detroit Country Day will face off at 6pm. At 8pm, East lansing will play Detroit Consortium. Then on Sunday Feb. 7 at noon, Clarkston will face the Academy of Oak Park and at 3pm The MIGHTY Saginaw High Trojans will face the Flint Powers. Tickets for these events will be $10. So come out and show your support for a good cause.

Was this Favre’s last chance?

January 25th, 2010

The Minnesota Vikings lost the NFC championship game because of turnovers and Brett Favre’s interception in the waning seconds of regulation. Brett Favre seemed to turn into 2003 interception throwing Brett Favre. He hadn’t really done it all season. But then on third-and-15 in the last few seconds of the game, with his team getting into field-goal range, Favre rolls out right, passes up an easy eight-yard scramble and fires a ball across his body to a covered Sidney Rice and the ball was picked by Tracy Porter. It was a play we’ve all seen a dozen times. He had held back for much of the season, not throwing the ball into quadruple coverage or with his left hand while getting sacked by an entire defensive line. Fumbles hurt the Vikings too. I would have loved to see Peyton vs. Favre- New great vs. Old great! I really hope that Favre retires after this!

J-Rich to the Bench!!!!!

Bobjohnson’s Blog.

Jason Richardson has been moved from his starting position to coming off the bench. J-Rich is taking this well according to his comments to the Arizona Press, “I don’t know what’s going on. I’ve never come off the bench my whole career. If that’s something they want me to do, I’m willing to do it. I’m the type of guy that just wants to win. I’m a professional. I’m always coming to do my job and play hard.”
I’m glad J-Rich is does not have any A.I. in his blood.
J-Rich is being replaced by Leandro Barbosa. Coach Alvin Gentry says that he is trying to get Barbosa going. Bobjohnson has a different opinion. I smell a trade coming. I think the Sun’s are going to trade J-Rich and get maximum value for him.
I would love to see him come home and play for Detroit. We need talent like him really bad at this moment and I would have an excuse to get a press pass to the Palace!
Let me know what you think of all of this, Sports Fans!

The KellZone: Tribute to “Bandwagon Fan”: True Piston Fans us True Laker Fans Respect You

(The views expressed in this written work from a Laker fan are not necessarily those of Bobjohnson or Saginawsports.com)

Has anyone seen Seattle Sonic fan lately? Shouldn’t Seattle Sonic fan be a Thunder fan now, the team that was once Seattle. Who is Seattle Sonic fan? Come on, you know who Sonic Fan is…Sonic Fan is the guy that couldn’t get enough of telling me in home room and at lunch time at Saginaw high back in 1994, how huge a fan they were of the CHAMPIONSHIP CONTENDER 63 win Sonic team.

Yeah, when Shawn Kemp was everyone’s favorite player ever. Yeah, Seattle Sonic fan that rocked the Sonics jersey at the mall, at the movies, and swore up and down he’s a die hard Sonic fan….Afterall, they just won 63 games and are favored to win the championship…..Wait, 8 seeded Denver Nuggets just upset Seattle?! Wow, where is Sonic fan??? It’s a year later and Sonic fan is now rocking a Penny Hardaway jersey. Sonic fan no longer goes as Sonic fan, but now as Orlando Magic fan!! Yeah, Orlando after winning 60 plus games, young great talent…Penny and Shaq the new Magic and Kareem….So now Magic Fan is talking crap about him being a huge Orlando fan…Hmmm…I guess…..Wait, Orlando loses to Rockets in finals…..Wow,…Hey, isn’t that Orlando Magic fan over there now rocking a Bulls jersey??? Yeah it is! Now Orlando Magic fan is Chicago Bull Fan! Bulls just won 72 games and yes the championship. Now Chicago Bull fan is talking major smack and looking around hoping no one recognized him as Seattle Sonic fan two years prior……You all know the story…BANDWAGON FANS! They come in all shapes and sizes and you most recognize them when a team that they never cared for, begin winning at a high volume. Add that with a dynamic all star caliber player, then we stand no chance against Bandwagon Fan. Make no mistake about it, I am a die hard Laker fan of 27 years! In 1986 I cried when Ralph Sampson made the last second buzzer beater to eliminate my Lakers in 5 games of the western conference finals. I lost sleep when the Pistons swept the Lakers in 89. In 1993, game 5 of the western conference first round playoffs, Byron Scott missed a 3 pointer that would’ve sent sir Charles Barkley and the Suns home packing. I baracaded myself in my room that whole weekend in sadness. In 2000, at a local barbershop, there was this lady who was a so called huge Portland fan. If you recall, Portland was also a contender, and some favored them to win the championship. We argued up and down about who’s team was better. She even made statements on how she even tried to go to Portland to watch them play….Wait there’s more….It was more than one incident of smack off between me and Portland Fan at the barbershop on separate occasions, tons of it! It was all in fun, and I questioned if she was really a true die hard Blazer fan…She said yeah….Fast forward four years later on a warm summer day, July2004 at the B.V Center….I’m working on the leg press….I hear a voice, and a lady walks in jokingly teasing one of the fellas “Didn’t I tell you bout my Pistons…I told you we beat them Lakers”…..Little laughs here and there, I even give a little grin, but as I look up to glance at the lady, I took another look….IT WAS PORTLAND FAN! I just shook my head in disbelief…and I later gossiped with work out guy and told him I remember her from being a Portland Fan….we both laughed….So bandwagon fan can be either male or female…It really surprised me that there was a severe case of Bandwagonitis going on….With true die hard Piston fans, being a true Laker fan…I give them the utmost respect….True Piston fans were with their team during 60 plus games lost in 1994. They stuck with their team in the following 50 plus game lost season in 1995….Do I like the Pistons? No way, but I respect their “True Fans”. Howeva!!!!! There are some used to be Piston fans that have committed the ultimate sin in joining the Bandwagonitis crusade with Bandwagon Fan in cheering for LeBron and the Cavs. That’s like a Michigan football fan rocking an Ohio State jersey yelling ‘Get’em Buckeyes”!!!!! I don’t promote violence but that’s like Suge Knight wearing a blue sweat shirt with blue sneakers yelling “CaaaaaRIIIIIIP”…..I sat next to True Piston fan when the Lakers were in town last year, and we came to a temporary truce when we found out we both hated the Cavs in addition with our life long hatred of that team in Massachsetts. That same Sonic/Orlando/Bulls Fan is now wearing a Cavs jersey and swears up and down his loyalty is and has always been with the Cavs. Sure he couldn’t name the Cavs top 5 players from 1986-1991 (Mark Price, Brad Daugherty, Larry Nance, Jon Hot Rod Williams, Terrell Brandon) but he sure as heck ride and die with the Cavs all his life….As I conclude, I wrestle with the issue of debating against Bandwagon Fan on who’s team is better……Because as soon as Bandwagon Fan team fails, he’ll chose another good team, and we’ll start the cycle over again. Do I have issues with “Laker Haters”, no way! I welcome them. But the evil one is what bothers me….that same guy in my homeroom class with the 63 wins Seattle Sonic Shawn Kemp jersey on……..”Bandwagon Fan”

Guest Blog…by the Hashim Kelley..a.k.a the KellZone…Title: Tiger Woods isn’t YOUR FATHER

December 10th, 2009

“He let me down”. “I admired him”;”We expected more”. “Why would he do this to us”;? No these aren’t statement made by children who’s father abandoned them for many years. There are statements made by grown ups, via sports chatrooms and media outlets. From Bob Ryan to Jason Whitlock, two sports media personalities….TIGER LET THEM DOWN!. Wow, I didn’t know that Tiger guided them to learn to ride a tricycle without training wheels. I must have forgot that Tiger sat down and discussed with these heart broken adults The birds and the bees.. Someone needed to remind me that Tiger was the guy that sat these 35-50 something year olds on his lap to read them bed time stories and sip warm milk. Am I missing something here? Heck, I hate golf, I think it’s boring, but you know what, like every other red blooded American like me, that knows nothing about golf, when Tiger is on course to golf,
I’m gonna watch. Call me a villan, but I could care less how many mistresses he has, just text me next time he’s swinging the club on television. Why have GROWN AMERICA sort of kicked the children to the side and sort of gone “nan nan na nan nan, Such and such is my Father role model figure now, not yours. I hope he don’t let me down”? I remember watching kids, yes kids, cheer Berry Bonds after he slugged home runs out the park during the controversy of his alleged steroid use. But it was the ADULTS throwing a hissy fit about Bonds “letting them down”. Athletes are HUMAN. They do stupid bone head things that US HUMANS do. However, for some reason kids, I mean, ADULTS don’t understand that. Kobe, Jordan,A-Rod, Tyson,Tiger,Randy Moss, Shaq….these guys never let me down. Maybe if Kobe had a bad shooting night and kept forcing shots, and my Lakers lose, then yeah, I’m upset as a Laker fan. If Kobe goes out to a club and walk out with Jessica Simpson and Halle Berry, then yeah I’m upset….Because he’ll be one lucky son of a gun, and not me! What I’m saying is that, some people go over board with these demented feelings of athletes when
they prove to the world that their HUMAN! Hey, personally, I don’t agree with adultery, and it’s tons of other things I have views on, but as a FAN, I’m more concerned with my team winning a championship than concerned about how many strippers cell numbers my favorite married athlete has in his black book. “Hey Hashim, guess what..Kobe Bryant was caught cheating in a Vegas hotel”. Hashim’s Reply: O.k, but did the Lakers win? They didn’t???!!! NOOOOOOOO!!!! Lol….But seriously, we really need to mature when it comes to these athletes being human and making human mistakes….Well, unless they’re our father.

Hashim Kelley is a guest Blogger filling in for Bobjohnson today. Bobjohnson could not blog today because he is UPSET that TIGER let him down! LOL!

WHO is the REAL KING?

November 17th, 2009

By Bobjohnson (one-word)

What does Ron Artest, Marcus Camby, Quentin Richardson, Jason Richardson Kevin Martin and LeBron James all have in common besides basketball? Jordan, that’s what. The number 23, which is synonymous with the great retired basketball, player is the one common denominator that links these players. That’s right, at one point or another each one of them has or is currently sporting the deuce-trey (2-3). And if mini Mike (LeBron James) has anything to do with it, that link just like Mike, will be a thing of the past

King James, who has worn MJ’s old number since he came into the league, says he’s going to drop it in favor of another jersey number. Out of respect to Michael Jordan, James said he will be switching his number after this season from No. 23 to No. 6 and James wants to lead a movement to get every player who wears No. 23 in the league to give it up as a tribute to Jordan.

Richardson made a couple comments on his Twitter account in relation to James suggestion, first stating that the “NBA should have retired the number years ago,” then later tweeting “Changing my number was just a thought my tweet people. I’m going to wear 23 until the NBA decide to retire it.”

Me personally, if I was just coming into the league, I would be honored to wear  No. 23 especially if I was otherwise unknown. The thing with J-Rich is that he has made a name for himself as an elite player and is known very well. Honestly I feel like it may be a little too late for Richardson to change his number now unless he plans to do something extraordinary like win 6 back to back championships or something radical like flip out and pull a Dennis Rodman. Besides, Jordan was not a pioneer to the game of basketball. He didn’t make it possible for black kids around the world to enter the NBA. Don’t get me wrong, he was great but so was Julius Erving Magic Johnson and Karl Malone and yet Rip Hamilton and Shaq (Lakers and Heat) can wear No. 32.

Let’s keep the jersey retiring confined to the teams and not the whole league. Nice try though, Bron.

I feel you Jay,  keep your number and show King James that you (and Saginaw) don’t bow that easily!

The A(ye) I Team!

October 28th, 2009

By Bobjohnson

Allen Iverson was asked whether he is willing to accept coming off the bench in Memphis:
“Nah, I won’t accept it. Bench came into the play when I came to Detroit. You never heard about Allen Iverson coming off the bench ever in my whole career. It was never something people even thought in their head until I came to Detroit. Now, it’s the big topic. I’d be crazy to just out of my mouth say, ‘I’d be comfortable with being a guy coming off the bench.’ That’s never a role I ever had.”
I don’t look at it as a negative. On a basketball team, you need guys to come off the bench. That’s what makes up a whole team. You don’t play with five starters. But my whole thing is, if that makes us a better team, with me coming off the bench, then that’s something I would obviously do — if it results in wins. But I don’t know anybody in the world that would feel like me coming off the bench is the right thing to do if that’s not making the team better. It’s just an issue because it’s me.
“Everybody in the world knows I don’t want to come off the bench. So that’s why it’s an issue. It’s a conversation because people know that’s not what I want to do. It’s a media thing. I don’t think it has anything to do with basketball. Anybody in their right mind, to me, honestly knows that on this team or the teams I’ve been on, that I deserve to start.”
